History

The legacy of the Welwood, Bartholomew, and Weaver families has spanned almost 80 years. Through hard work, dedication, and sheer experience they have owned and operated three restaurants in the Dushore area.

During Prohibition, in the 1920's and 1930's, Nellie Thayer Welwood owned and operated the Blue Bird Tea Room. The Tea Room was located in the Green Swan building, on the corner of German and Main Streets, where the Acorn Market parking lot is today.

Nearly 40 years later, Ruberta Welwood Bartholomew and her husband George continued the restaurant line by purchasing The Red Fox Restaurant and Motel. They Successfully owned and operated their business until their retirement in 1990.

On January 3, 1993, Ruberta and her daughter Christine Bartholomew Weaver, purchased Scotty's Waterside Inn, formerly Jay Bird's, and added another restaurant to their family's credit. The location of the building, on the corner of the Railroad and Main Streets, prompted Ruberta and Chris to name their new establishment "The Whistle Stop." In honor of Dushore's glory days in the train era, their menu reflects a railroad theme and the motif is carried out with railroad lanterns, crockery jugs, and original artwork featuring railroad scenes, many of which are local. Together Ruberta and Chris's concept inspired a renewed interest in Dushore's railroad history, and started a trend in local businesses.

Ruberta left her restaurant tradition to her daughter, Christine, in 1998 when she passed away. Christine continued her family's tradition. She has even incorporated her own children, Sarah and Katie, into her successful endeavors.

Today the Whistle Stop thrives, thanks to their valued customers. With their faithful clientele base and strong restaurant background, they are sure to be an asset to Dushore for years to come.
